Marilith Valentineby ~Malcolmd

Another St. Valentine's Day card for the fantasy geek! Terrifying monsters fall in love too and, like my medusa and mind flayer, this Type IV demon has some tender sentiments to relay to a certain special soul ... while she fondles her rather doughy breasts.

I've made this image available as a print in case you'd like to use this as an actual valentine.

In D&D, not only is a distinction made between demons and devils, but they live in different dimensions and are mortal enemies, locked in an ageless struggle called the Blood War ... even though many of them don't actually have blood. I know that this is longstanding tradition in D&D, but I don't understand why it was written that way--did the writers feel the need to make evil spirits look bad by portraying them as politically conflicted? Isn't evil bad enough that you don't have to slander it with unrelated insults?

Even though it isn't perfect, I actually prefer the 4E characterization of devils as fallen servants of the gods and demons as twisted elemental beings. That sticks closer to Western ideas about supernatural evil, and it allows demons and devils to have more varied interactions. The disadvantage is that some examples, like this marilith, don't fit with their new characterization, which forces what was supposed to be a clever tactician and leader to be solely interested in madness and destruction.

So, for those of you who have read this far, can you guess which famous actress I modeled her face after? She should be well known to fantasy fans ...

Love this valentines card also I'm a big fan of Mariliths.
On the subject of Demons and Devils in D&D, The Classic Demons see Evil and Chaos as the Natural State while Classic Devils see Evil as a Choice. This is a basic idea about the two species based everything I've read over the years such all the Books Vile Darkness and other evil source books. I like how Devils are portrayed in 4thE but I feel the Demons come off as too primal and beastly. I use a house ruled version of 4thE with the demons being more intelligent but still on the chaotic side.

I like your view of the classic demons and devils viewing it as natural vs a choice--I've never heard that distinction before, but it's an interesting approach. And I agree with your assessment of the weakness of 4E demons. That limited characterization may relate to the overall attitude towards Chaotic Evil in 4E.

Thank you, I myself have a conflicted love of 4E.
I love the mechanical aspects of 4E such as the the Classes, the new Race stats, and the combat system so on and so fourth. On the other hand much of the background info on race, culture, species, and history is either not covered enough or is just unsatisfactory. My major disappointment is that the alignment system got well shafted. I house ruled most of the classic race backgrounds and I use the classic alignment system.
